Staycation with Abby, Part 1

I can’t believe we are already into fall.  Thankfully, we still have some nice weather.  A couple of weeks ago, my friend Abby came to visit me and we had a great few days enjoying museums, shopping, and some great eating (both at restaurants and cooking at home).  We had a fun time at Sunday Brunch at The National Arts Center, at Le Cafe.  I have to say, I’ve been to a bunch of different fancy brunch places, and Le Cafe is definitely one of the best places I’ve been to.  The selection is not as extensive as some other restaurants, but everything they make is done very well.  There wasn’t a mediocre dish.  I was most impressed with the desserts.  I find that a lot of the time that a wide variety of pretty desserts means that taste is sacrificed.   However, at Le Cafe, the desserts were AMAZING!  The mango pudding was Abby’s favourite, but I loved the chocolate mousse-it wasn’t too sweet and had a very light consistency (I ate three of them!)  It was a lot of fun and I highly recommend it.

Alaska Cruise-Behind the Scenes

I recently went on an Alaskan cruise with one of my friends, and we had a blast.  Alaska has to be one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to (and I’ve been lucky enough to have done some extensive travelling).  To be able to have the energy to do all the activities we planned-hiking, kayaking, biking-we needed to be well fed: and boy, were we well fed!  The cruise ship had an AMAZING selection of food.  Various buffets, several times a day, and 24 hour room service!  And it was high quality food too.  Breakfast buffet that included waffles, french toast, and an omelet station; lunch buffet; afternoon tea, where there were various desserts and cookies and scones; afternoon sushi buffet; dinner buffet and fixed seating dining!

Best of all (food-related), we got to tour the kitchens.  The kitchens were in operation 24 hours a day and they baked all the bread and goodies from scratch.  It was so organized and efficient!

I had a fabulous time on this cruise, and would highly recommend it.  Beautiful scenery, tons of activities, and, of course, delicious food!
